Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.
-Albert Einstein
This is true, when you look at historic examples. Galileo, for example, when he insisted that the sun was the center of the solar system, and not the Earth, he was met with this ‘violent opposition’. A heliocentric view of the universe was contradictory to the views of the Catholic Church at that time, even if he offered ‘advanced scientific proof’. He defended himself and the Copernican ideas.
Pope Paul V instructed Cardinal Bellarmine to deliver this finding to Galileo, and to order him to abandon the Copernican opinions. On 26 February, Galileo was called to Bellarmine’s residence and ordered
… to abandon completely… the opinion that the sun stands still at the center of the world and the earth moves, and henceforth not to hold, teach, or defend it in any way whatever, either orally or in writing.
— The Inquisition’s injunction against Galileo, 1616
And even though how much the people have threatened him, he still held true to his ideas.
They say a great idea can turn into something even more innovative, such as a spark can blaze into a great inferno. But, anyone can snuff out a spark.
